Bamboo Seedling Varieties for Cultivation & Planting Projects

Dendrocalamus Asper

Dendrocalamus Asper

Widely known as “giant bamboo,” Dendrocalamus asper is valued for its fast growth, thick culms and adaptability. It establishes well in Kenya’s highland and mid-elevation regions and is commonly used in cultivation projects focused on long-term material production.

With proper management, asper develops into strong, structurally suitable bamboo used for construction, fencing and biomass applications. It is often selected for projects aiming to build a future supply of high-value bamboo material rather than short-term yield.

Dendrocalamus Giganteus

Dendrocalamus Giganteus

Dendrocalamus giganteus is known for its exceptional height and visual impact. It is typically used in large-scale agroforestry and erosion control projects where space and long-term planning are available.

While its culms are lighter than those of asper, giganteus is valued in applications where scale, aesthetics and landscape impact are key considerations.

Bambusa Vulgaris

Bambusa Vulgaris

Bambusa vulgaris is one of the most widely cultivated bamboo species in tropical regions. It is frequently used in projects focused on live fencing, erosion control and community-based planting initiatives due to its fast growth and ease of management.

This species adapts well to diverse Kenyan climates and is commonly selected where rapid establishment and low maintenance are priorities.

Bambusa Nana

Dendrocalamus Asper

Bambusa nana (dwarf bamboo) is used primarily for hedges, borders and ornamental planting. Its compact growth habit makes it suitable for projects where space is limited or where controlled height is required.

It is not intended for structural use, but is widely applied in landscaping, privacy screening and small-scale cultivation initiatives.

These species are used in cultivation and planting projects supported by We Do Bamboo. Availability depends on project scope, location and season.

🇰🇪 Locally Grown to Support Kenya’s Bamboo Sector

All bamboo planting material used in our cultivation projects is produced locally in Kenya. This supports local nurseries, creates employment opportunities, and contributes to improved soil health and climate resilience.

Seedlings play an important role in reforestation, land restoration and the long-term development of a sustainable bamboo supply chain.

Working Together with Farmers

We don’t simply source bamboo. We work with farmers across Kenya to build long-term cultivation partnerships that focus on responsible growing practices, fair collaboration and future value creation.
